When it comes to fondant, you have two options, dye the fondant with food gel colors or buy colored fondant and mix them to create new colors. Usually when you use to make cakes you keep your left overs and the colored fondant increases in your stock and you can use it to create new colors.

It’s very important to have the primary colors: pure red, pure blue and pure yellow. You cannot simply create this colors by mixing other colors just dye with the food gel color or once again buy it dyed.

When you combine any two of the Pure Primary Hues, you get three new mixtures called Secondary Colors, orange, violet and green. These colors you can get them dying the fondant with food gels or mixing the primary colors to create the secondary colors.

Red, brown, and black are colors that need more food gel color than most. If you want a pretty yellow or pink, no problem. If you want black, red or brown you may need to work a little harder and use more food gel paste than you might expect. It may be a little harder to mix but it is well worth the effort. When we start making cute little character you will see how good it is to make your own fondant and color it yourself.

Before you tint your fondant you will need to warm it up first. All you need to do is cut off a piece and start to work it with your hands. The warmth of your hands will help soften it which will make it easier when you mix in the food gel paste.

Once you add the food gel paste to the fondant, all you need to do is work it into the fondant until the fondant is a solid color. No more white streaks or little swirls of brown. If you mix a lighter color, you will only need a little food gel to start. You can always add more to achieve the color you are looking for. If your color is too dark, you can work in a few pieces of white fondant to lighten it up.
